Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders: Family and Ethical Issues

Alzheimer’s disease not only affects the lives of those with the disease but also changes the lives of their family members. Imagine how upsetting it is to find that your spouse will not grow old with you and do the things you planned together. Imagine the strain it puts on the children as they find themselves caring for their parent who no longer remembers them. The emotional and physical toll of providing care for basic activities to a once independent loved one can be overwhelming. Caring for the person with Alzheimer’s disease also means caring for the family, but remember that all families handle situations differently and their needs will vary. In this module, you will learn about the issues that family members face when a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease and ways you can help them through this often turbulent time. Additionally, you will learn about common ethical issues that may arise when caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease.
