Outline:
INTRODUCTION
To understand the history, philosophy, goals, and objectives of end-of-life care, hospice aides will recognize personal and professional developmental issues related to the care of dying patients.
PAIN AND SYMPTOM MANAGEMENT
To better prepare hospice aides for recognizing pain and other unwanted symptoms.
COMMUNICATION
To improve the hospice aides ability to observe and communicate timely information about end-of-life care issues to patients, families, professional care givers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
CARING FOR DYING PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
To help the hospice aide participate more supportively in the care of dying patients and their families.
CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS
To assist the hospice aide in recognizing how cultural differences affect the care of dying patients and their families. GRIEF
To help the hospice aide understand the feelings of grief and bereavement in themselves and in the patients and families for whom they care.
ETHICS
To explore and provide the hospice aide with an understanding of ethical considerations he or she may face in the treatment and care of end-of-life patients.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
To teach the hospice aide to recognize personal and professional developmental issues related to the care for dying patients.
PROGRAM REVIEW
Subject Matter Expert: Cathy Schutt, APRN-BC, CHPN, RN-BC
Cathy Schutt is founder and president of Pain Resources Network. She is an advanced nurse practitioner with clinical specialties in both pain and palliative care, and she has been a certified hospice trainer since 1997. She is also certified with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as an RN-BC in pain management. She has created and implemented clinical competency programs in pain management and palliative care for major Boston teaching hospitals, long-term care facilities, hospices and home care organizations throughout the Northeast. She also lectures on pain and symptom management nationally. Ms. Schutt has consulted, developed programs with, or written materials for the National Cancer Institute; the American Cancer Society; Raytheon Company; and the Associated Industries of Massachusetts. She has published articles with the American Occupational Health Nursing Journal, the American Cancer Society Publications and Programs, and Nutrition Research.
